MEC (ACA Compliance)

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires most individuals to have minimum essential coverage (MEC), or they will pay a penalty for each month they are uninsured. MEC is a health coverage that will meet certain standards. Most insurance, such as coverage provided by employers, Medicare and most Medicaid, is MEC and satisfies the ACA’s individual responsibility requirement, also known as the individual mandate.

First Dollar Coverage

First dollar coverage is an insurance that covers health care expenses without copayments or deductibles needing to be paid first. It pays expenses beginning with the first dollar charged for health care or hospitalization depending on the type of policy purchased.

Deductible Programs

Deductible programs are the amount the insurer will deduct from the loss before paying up to its policy limits. After the insurer pays their deductible, they usually only pay a copayment or coinsurance for covered services, while the insurance company pays the rest. Usually, the amount of the deductible is not subtracted from policy limits.

Benefits Administration

While some believe benefits are company-paid and employee-paid, the company usually pays for most types of benefits (holiday pay, vacation pay, etc.). However, some benefits, such as medical insurance, are often paid, at least in part, by employees because of the high costs of medical insurance.
